RoadLingua is a "dictionary viewer" program for Palm&trade and Pocket PC™ handhelds. Richard Buck has a created a lexicon for this program that allows you to easily look up definitions for any OWL2 word (up to 8 letters) on your handheld.

The trial version of RoadLingua is free. To upgrade to avoid "nags", visit the RoadLingua web site.

Download a ZIP file containing a trial version of RoadLingua, the OWL2 lexicon, and release notes from the OWL2 package.

RoadLingua for the Palm OS is included in this zip file. The Pocket PC version can be found at the RoadLingua web site.

OWL2defs includes definitions for all acceptable 2 to 8 letter words in the OWL2 (the National Scrabble Association Official Tournament and Club Word List, Second Edition) and some longer words from both the OWL2 and the LWL (Long words List). Words without available definitions are not included.

Most of the definitions and internal links were obtained from Michael Thelen's Zyzzyva word list file for OWL2-LWL at zyzzyva.net

For anagramming, pattern searches and formal challenge adjudications on a Palm handheld, you should be using LAMPWords. But for informal direct lookups of 2- to 8-letter words, for both acceptability and definitions, use RoadLingua. In most cases the word you want will come up on the screen before you've typed all the letters, and you can browse by scrolling and/or following clickable links within definitions. You can also search for words within definitions.

More definitions may be added to future versions. This version already includes many words you won't find in the printed OSPD4:

- OWL2-acceptable offensive and trademarked words that were omitted from the OSPD.

- Singular nouns of 9 letters or longer that have acceptable plurals of 8 letters or shorter.

- 9-letter words formed by adding a letter to the back of an 8-letter word. I've tried to include all of these, but some of them appear only as inflections or run-on entries within the definition of the shorter word.

Remember that, just as in the OSPD, words may have other definitions that are are not included here. For more complete definitions, use a real dictionary.
