Soda vs Pop

Where I grew up, we called every beverage "caffeine-free Diet Dr. Pepper". One time, I ordered "caffeine-free Diet Dr. Pepper" at the diner, and the waitress asked me "which kind?" "Milk", I said.

I've always called it exactly what it is, I guess. Even when drinking the grocery store funny knock-off brands. "Hey, who wants a Dr. K? No? How about a Mountain Lightning?" I wish I were making these up.

But learning that cows produce caffeine-free Dr. Pepper...that's definitely an eye-opener.

I'm interested to learn what exactly made St. Louis and Milwaukee develop into Midwestern enclaves of "soda". A desire to be different than Chicago? Something to do with being major beer hubs? Smart enough to realize that "pop" is ridiculous?

I grew up in North Carolina so I still believe everyone should refer to carbonated beverages as "Coke".

I noticed that, in California, all but one county prefers soda over everything else.

And then, there's one county that prefers "coke."

Theory:

This is not due to the idea of calling soft drinks one thing or another that "coke" is so overwhelmingly popular, but instead due to the fact that, in this county, drugs are used overwhelmingly more than soft drinks are drunk.

A) Dr. Pemberton did put coke in the original Coca-Cola, without fanfare since for the next 30 years or so heroin, cocaine, hashish, opium and other fiendish delights were available at corner drugstores and Good For What Ails You, not prescribed.

B) I have three comments about the map- 1) cool that They did a survey 2) 'Respondants'*? Cirrhusly*? 3) the map is 'based upon' the respondents? That's either macabre (sari no agave/ague) or a massive human-pixel project!

C) I grew up on 'pop' and not only does it round out those Shasta jingles quite ably, but is the distinct household product. I support linguistic orthogony*! That is to say, TONIC is most popularly a hair solution- taken! Soda is something you bake with. Pop has no competition.
