#note Quackle's static evaluator's recommendation of ABIDE 6J is not a good play because it gives too many good scoring overlaps on row 5, but A9 BANI is better than my play. L6 ADENINE is a play that I did not think of, and I also like it a lot. The board after it is pretty bad for bingos, so keeping a scoring tile in the B and turning over a lot of one pointers is actually a good thing there. Not to mention, O draws will give OB A8 on the next turn.
>David_Whitley: TW 11D W.T +15 207
>David_Koenig: AEEINPT 6I PATINE +22 254
#note The race to the S's is so important here that playing for maximum turnover is called for. However, I missed two better plays that achieved the same thing: PINETA/NEPETA A1. Those plays aren't a full seven points better than my play because of the lines they open for eight letter bingos, but they're still preferable.
>David_Whitley: ADFNOS A1 FONDAS +38 245
>David_Koenig: AAELMTT B1 AME +25 279
#note I missed the very nice bingo FLATMATE here. That said, except for the bingo, I think my play is better than the other ones that Quackle ranks above it. There are a couple of reasons for this. It's important to play aggressively for points, block bingo lanes, and turn over at least three tiles here. And AME is better than AMA because there are many more E's than A's unseen to me, while holding the A for the OMA hook is also valuable.
>David_Whitley: AKLT C3 TALK +29 274
>David_Koenig: AAEELTT D4 TAE +20 299
#note Not bad, but D2 TELAE is an improvement.
>David_Whitley: S 2A ..S +14 288
>David_Koenig: AEELSTZ 11I TEAZELS +90 389
#note I remembered that between TEAZELS and TEASELS, only one of them allowed a reversal of the -EL- sequence. I was at least 99% sure TEAZLES was the good one, but I decided to play the word I was 100% sure of, especially given that it seemed like I would be an almost sure winner no matter which one I picked. However, TEAZLES is clearly a bit better, because it is less flexible for row 12 underlaps. What I was not expecting was how scarily close he was going to be able to make this endgame.
>David_Whitley: DOR 12K DOR +35 323
>David_Koenig: EEFGHJU 13M GJU +30 419
#note This is the only play that guarantees I do not lose. I need to block DROLeST 13I, but if he bingos out with STRODLEs F2 we would have our second tie of the tournament at 419-419. Plot twist: he overscored his opening move QUENA as 50 instead of 48, and neither of us had caught the error, so I would have needed to recount to scrape out the tie. (If the D is in the bag, his best play of tHROSTLE F1 would be a two point win for me.)
>David_Whitley: DHLORST 10H SOH +41 364
#note David found his highest scoring play, worth one more point than the easier-to-spot position at 14M.
