Game 2
Yikes, sim says this is a huge mistake, prefers G8 CLAN or CAIN, or just dropping an N.
>shdbwrking: ?AEGMNZ K9 GAZE +33 43
>kacattac: ACNOPSS 13K SOP +25 38
#note Distant second in the sim to L11 ASP. I looked there but decided to cling to the A instead of the O. Scores the same, so the positioning must be decisive.
>shdbwrking: ?IMNTUW 12J M.W +26 69
>kacattac: AACLNNS G9 CLAN +20 58
#note Again sims distant second to the same word+score at 10F. But I don't know why I should want to build a staircase and take out the S(AL) hook in row 7.
>shdbwrking: ?DINTUU H12 UNIT +18 87
>kacattac: AFINQSS G14 QI +24 82
#note Boh-ring/"the dark side of scrabble." I really wanted to play 10F F(L)AN instead and leave this new opening alone. But if you care about winning you have to make the boring play. L7 QIS sims only 2 worse than this and looks more appealing now than it did in the moment. It kills the lane that is most valuable to me but is unlikely to kill the right side forever, and it doesn't muck up the bottom middle.
>shdbwrking: ?BDEIUX 10J D.UB +19 106
#note SK notes: assuming opp remembers SOP, he knows I have at least one S, so I wondered if this was not first and foremost a defensive play. It's actually just his best play straight up if 10F I(L)EX is eliminated on the basis of said S.
>kacattac: AEFLNSS 7B FANLESS +65 147
#note I don't see anything remotely appealing and talk myself into 50/50 odds for this phoney. Sim's top valid choices all blow up the rack and give back tonz. I also have decided (perhaps incorrectly) that DAUB signals a weak rack. Also that with knowledge of my rack after a successful challenge opp would still have to work around the potential eights. Also that I have a good record on challenges with this opp.
>shdbwrking: ?EIOSVX 8A VEX +53 159
>kacattac: BCENTUV F4 CUV.E +18 165
#note I notice the VEX(T) potential but decide to file it away, whiffing on UNBE(N)T and BU(N)T, which I should cash in now if I see them.
>shdbwrking: ?DEEIOS 4C DIO.ESEs +72 231
>kacattac: ABIJNTU H1 JIB. +39 204
#note Sim prefers JAB(S) by 1. I'm always going to keep an A over an I when the chances of doubling up are equal, and I'm not seeing any reason to deviate from that here.
>shdbwrking: AFIOOTW 5I WOOF +26 257
>kacattac: ADNOTUY N10 YOU +33 237
#note Sims best. Opp can totally have an H, and if so the game can get away from us right here, but at ~20% to win we just have to cross our fingers.
>shdbwrking: AGIRRTT O12 TRIG +21 278
>kacattac: ADEGNNT 9B DEN +23 260
#note Brilliant or stupid? It's automatically stupid in this case because I didn't even notice that this creates a new opening; I just liked the score and liked keeping -(I)NG possibilities alive in row 2; all of this despite taking out column A, which I didn't like at all. Sim prefers DENT by about 1.5, probably because DEN can too easily give opp a bingo before I have a chance for one of my own. Knowing all of this I might still gamble with DEN, but I could have thought it through more thoroughly here. Of course this is Scrabble, so I would be rewarded handsomely for my stupidity later on.
>shdbwrking: ?AAIRTY L1 RATI.Y +26 304
>kacattac: AAGLNRT 2J GR.AL +20 280
#note Sim prefers this at 3A by the same margin as the difference in score. I thought it was more important to block HE(A)RT types of plays. I did see 14L TAL(I), which keeps row 2 bingos alive. That seemed too cute, but sim says it is equal to my play.
>shdbwrking: ?AADEET 6I ED +20 324
>kacattac: AHIINTT 3L .HIN +26 306
#note Sim strongly prefers (T)HAT, keeping double-I. This I don't follow. I still have not seen the opening I made with DEN; sim's very most favorite play is E9 TAHINI, taking out that spot. That leaves me down 20+tempo with little scoring in the pool, so I don't see how that ever wins against a human opp even if I draw the blank. It's also interesting to consider bag tempo here. I was thinking that leaving more in the bag is better since a three or four tile play by opp next turn leaves me in good position to empty+go out first. But now I notice opp has some nice two-tile spots like 5E and N14 with which to turn that tempo back on me with an H or M play, so maybe that thinking was not correct.
