#note Rd 6 of Philly virtual 1-24-2021. Context going into this game: Ed has to beat me by 63 points or more to overtake me and ending my hopes of winning the tourney. I would have liked to have a rack that allows me to make a more defensive play without screwing myself with a bad leave. So I might as well play more open for now and I'll wing it.
>eddybear: DDGIMRU 7B DRUM +16 16
#note Maybe E7 GOURD or 9H DIRDUM are better options for him if he needs to be as open as possible.
>skaplan31: EIIOTXY E7 ..XIE +28 48
#note I did consider 7G OXY for 30 here. That would have been defensive in the short term, but Ed will use the Y to open the right side and keep me on my toes just because I suspected the right side wouldn't be closed for very long. The D in DRUM is low key a dangerous tile to leave open. EIIT just doesn't do very well next turn on this board. EXIT 6E is 4 more and is as open as MOXIE but 2x2 possiblities will still exist. I didn't want those to be in play.
>eddybear: ADGILMR D10 GRID +17 33
#note I would have done D11 DIRAM here.
>skaplan31: EIORTYZ C12 TIZ +32 80
#note Ed's last play was very aggressive, and given the circumstances, I do need to make this play over B7 DITZY or 14B OYEZ.
>eddybear: AALMORS B1 ARMLOA.S +76 109
#note Nice find Ed!
>skaplan31: AEEEORY A1 YEA +39 119
#note I have plenty of Es that the GRIDE hook doesn't need to be used immediately. Let's deal with the 3x3 first given the context.
>eddybear: BEEOOST 7H BOOTEES +65 174
#note I respect this play, I can't close down everything now.
>skaplan31: AEEENOR 14A RA.EE +35 154
#note Now I pretty much have to do this.
>eddybear: AEFSUUV A12 VE.A +33 207
#note 15E FAUVE would have done really well for him here, I already can't block everything as is.
>skaplan31: DEGINOT K5 DO.TING +36 190
#note Did not know 11D REDINGOTE. That is a sick word. F10 GEOID should have been my move here, not risking a big J play.
>eddybear: CFINSUU F10 FICUS +55 262
#note And that's what happens when I find a good play but not a great play. Nice move Ed!
>skaplan31: AEKLNTU C1 KEA +37 227
#note N2 TALUKS is better. This is 2nd best scoring play.
>eddybear: EFINNRU 8M FIN +25 287
#note I would not have blocked 5D UNFRIEND, which does play for 74. I got lucky he missed it.
>skaplan31: AAHLNTU D3 HUT +21 248
#note Maybe 6J HO is better, but given the circumstances I wanted to try playing defense myself blocking the O in ARMLOADS and partially blocking the D in DOTTING. After Ed decided to block floaters in BOOTEES, this decision was certainly easier. And it's especially the case with 2 blanks still unseen.
>eddybear: EINNORU 10H REU.ION +11 298
#note I was relieved that he did this. It can be inferred that maybe he was going for the J.
>skaplan31: AADJLNQ 6J J. +50 298
#note Luckily I drew it.
>eddybear: CEENOVW H10 .EWOVE +48 346
#note Nice play, 48 is a lot on this board.
>skaplan31: ?AADLNQ J9 Q.AD +28 326
>eddybear: BCHNNTY 15G B.NNY +10 356
#note Looks fine to me.
>skaplan31: ??AALNT 5A p.s.NATAL +64 390
#note All righty... I did not think that a nonbingo would win the sim here, but I was certainly wrong. I did take at least 5 minutes here looking for bingoes and while I'm certainly happy to find this one (I also found SALTATION and STATIONAL which don't play while making 1 blank an I), this does not guarantee me a win like I thought it might. Here's why: Ed is clearly consonant heavy before BENNY and after BENNY. L4 LATE does a nice job of setting up my A (and my blanks), and Ed did not always draw the S after BENNY. Even if he did, I can easily outrun with both blanks regardless if he drew the SLATE hook or a vowel because worst case he probably has SHEW or SHIP among the very few higher scoring S plays he can even have with the clunk that's there. Ed would not want to hook QUAD with his S as I can bingo out easily after that as LATE would have left 1 in the bag. So he would have been severely handicapped if I had done L4 LATE. That is clearly a stronger play despite the huge immediate point sacrifice.

>eddybear: CEHLSTW 13J SHEW +35 391
#note And in this case, Ed did miss his wins of H1 SCHWA or H1 THECA.
>skaplan31: GILP 4F LIP +19 409
#note Whew
>eddybear: CLT F4 ..C +11 402
#note L12 TEC would have been 1 more spread point for him.
>skaplan31: G G3 G.. +6 415
#note And that's a tourney win for me!

Biggest lesson learned from the POSTNATAL position: if the opponent can't do much about a setup with the unseen pool, make the setup. That would have required a huge sacrifice of points on Ed's end after leaving 1 in the bag, and then the endgame becomes easy with the blanks simply having to play an out in 2.
