>Arie: ?AHIOWY 8G HIYA +20 20
#note First game of the tournament and of my trip to the Eastern U. S. to play in three tournaments. I immediately get confronted with an opening rack that's too complex for me to analyze. Sim's top choice is WHY in any of the three places. I saw WHY and recognized that it scored a bit more and was better for defense, but didn't feel like my bingo chances with AIO? were very good. And yet according to the sim, I bingo more with WHY than with HIYA, and it slightly reduces Emily's average score next turn (not even by that much). YOW also sims better than HIYA. I think I liked HIYA because it is unhookable and I tend to overvalue leaves with 3-4 pointers and vowel/consonant balance. OW? looks like a pretty decent leave to me, whereas AIO? looks weak - in reality AIO? is probably better.
>Emily: RVY J7 V.RY +18 18
>Arie: ?ADOOWX 6F WAXwOOD +90 110
#note Here I thought that WAXwOOD was good and WOODwAX possibly wasn't - reality is that the opposite is true. I probably should be playing WOODwAX anyhow - I was about 50% on it, but for some reason was quite certain about WAXWOOD. WOODwAX scores 8 more of course.
>Emily: HOW 5K HOW +31 49
>Arie: EEIINOT L4 I..INE +16 126
#note I saw this and played it pretty quickly, thinking that it was as good a vowel dump as I could hope for. I also had NITERIE 9F for 23, which I did not see. NITERIE is actually a bit risky because of 8L-O. I actually think with a lead I should probably just go for IODINE; NITERIE gives back an easy 40-50 points, whereas IODINE eliminates a good scoring spot on row 4 (though it creates a new one on column M).
>Emily: ABTT 10F BATT. +16 65
>Arie: DEEOQRT 5E DOTE +26 152
#note I sacrifice a few points here to retain ER with the Q - probably won't bingo next turn but if I get an I or a U and I can bail the Q out it's nice to have some bingo tiles already. Sim really wants me to score a few more points and play a few more tiles, with TEREDO N2 winning. I get it, there are 4 Us out and it would be nice to draw one, and more points now is always good. TEREDO sets up column O, which is bad, but takes out HOWE, which is good. A panoply of other plays also outsims DOTE. I don't know what I was thinking, I saw ER and thought I would be well advised to give up a few points to keep it.
>Emily: IKT 4H KIT +31 96
>Arie: AEEPQRR J2 QA. +32 184
#note Boring unequivocally best play.
>Emily: CLOT 4C CLOT +21 117
>Arie: EEFPRRZ N3 PREZ +45 229
#note Another boring unequivocally best play.
>Emily: ADGLNNS -4 +0 117
>Arie: EFIRRSU C3 S.URFIER +86 315
#note FRISEUR M9 scores one more point but has obvious defensive liabilties.
>Emily: ADGLNNS - +0 117
#note Emily challenged SCURFIER.
>Arie: DEGGINO H10 .OGGED +33 348
#note This is probably fine - creates bingo lines, but it's not like I'm going to lose this game with a 231 point lead.
>Emily: AAMNRST M9 MANTRAS +81 198
#note Best bingo.
>Arie: AEIINOS 15K NI.EI +18 366
#note Perhaps I should consider fishing here - OI K1 leaves AEINS, which is fairly strong, for a sacrifice of only 5 points right now. I just hate making dinky looking fishes that don't end up working out half the time. Q thinks I'm bingoing 42% of the time after OI and 22% of the time after NISEI. It's probably worth it, albeit barely.
>Emily: JO M2 JO +26 224
>Arie: ABEOPSS O5 SABE +40 406
#note This is fine - best equity.
>Emily: DFU N8 FUD +28 252
>Arie: ?EGIOPS 15A GOsSIPE. +86 492
#note This is best. I have drawn very well this game.
>Emily: AENV 8A NA.VE +36 288
>Arie: EILMNUU 13C MULIN. +20 512
#note I knew this play wasn't that great, but I was running low on time and went with something that would score a few points right now and threaten to go out next turn - provided I avoid drawing an E. CP wants to fish, which can't succeed. Probably the best option I have is to play UNGLUE 13F, which leaves IM and always threatens to go out
>Emily: ACEELNR 12J CAN.ER +18 306
>Arie: ELU 12A LEU +8 520
#note Best out. Excellent tiles enabled me to start the tournament with a good spread despite making probably 5 suboptimal plays in 13 turns.
>Arie: (EL) +4 524
