Player 1
#player1 PA Paul Avrin
#player2 JJB John J. Bulten
>PA: EJKRS 8D JERKS +48 48
#note ~1:00 [~24:00]
>JJB: DEEOSUV D8 .UDOS +26 26
#note ~2:00 [~23:00] Missed bingo through R for 52.3 more evaluation points; in fact, 10 plays through R rank better than burning the S here.
>PA: BENT C11 BENT +18 66
#note ~1:00 [~23:00] Excellent hook setup.
>JJB: ABEEFOV B10 FAB +26 52
#note ~3:00 [~20:00] JJB spots above/bento (31.9 better) and fails to bring himself to accept that beton has an anagram. Fovea/e in 3 places are also better.
>PA: HMOS 15A MOSH +46 112
#note ~1:00 [~22:00]
>JJB: DEOOTUV F4 OUTD.OVE +72 124
#note ~0:17 [19:43] JJB is still trying to get all the over- words to the proficiency level of his out- words, but finally draws into a rack he knows to claim the lead.
>PA: DFIO A7 FIDO +29 141
#note ~1:00 [~21:00]
>JJB: DIINORZ H4 ZORI. +24 148
#note 2:22 [17:21] A little more time might have yielded zooid 34 or fiz 25, which score better, leave better, and evaluate better, up to 10.5.
>PA: ILOPPR 4H .ORIL +28 169
#note ~0:30 [~20:30] PA admits missing zippo here, which would have broken away strongly.
>JJB: CDIIILN J3 I.IDIC +13 161
#note 1:30 [15:51] At a tournament in memory of Steve Polatnick et al., JJB lets "style points" overtake leave and score again, not analyzing his way to nidi 16 (4.2 better evaluation) or spotting vinic 16.
>PA: ANPPV B6 VAN +21 190
#note ~0:30 [~20:00] Pipa 24 was also available and doesn't hurt despite its slight extra openness. Above 20 is worth considering; that double never gets claimed all game. JJB was convinced viridic* was available.
>JJB: AELNRTT K3 N.T +12 173
#note 2:27 [13:24] In this case bingo leaves were rated almost correctly, but 14a (attent 29) and 8j yield enough points to rate up to 2.3 higher.
>PA: PPY 3I Y.. +19 209
#note ~0:36 [19:24]
>JJB: ACELLRT 8J .ARCEL +33 206
#note 1:38 [11:46] Best, but JJB was a little sketchy about whether cercal was also good.
>PA: EGNPP 4B PENG. +16 225
#note 1:23 [18:01] Also considerable: pepo 16 and nappe k7 20.
>JJB: AAEGLTW C2 WA. +12 218
#note 1:43 [10:03] The beautiful aw/pavan is 8 points better. However, JJB was taking a cue from PA's bent and setting up a T hook with strong potential instead.
>PA: EGOPRUW L7 G.OUPER +20 245
#note 2:14 [15:47] Uptore 14a 37 is well worth the GW leave (14.2 ahead); owt also plays, and gown d1 20 leads the blocking plays. PA declines the too-open regroup 20 and alternatives, but has hopes of capturing remaining goodies.
>JJB: AEEGLRT N7 R.LEGATE +72 290
#note 0:22 [9:41] All the best bingos leave nonuples or multiple triple hooks, so JJB opts for the latter despite not recalling all the anagrams.
>PA: ?AAAEEW O13 AWA +25 270
#note 2:49 [12:58] PA did not hope for those kind of goodies but makes the best play, with still a little hope.
>JJB: HLMNSTY 1A MYTH +55 345
#note 1:04 [8:37] JJB's difficult draw leads to an easy decision. PA regards this as probably sealing the game, but there is still another blow to come.
>PA: ?AAE 2B A.E +27 297
#note ~2:08 [~10:50] PA is hoping to draw, or blank, the S, because most other bingo slots are getting locked up.
>JJB: EIILNQS 14J QIS +43 388
#note 0:17 [8:20] JJB draws the S and a straightforward "perfect block".
>PA: ?AEINTU 15G UNAI +23 320
#note ~7:57 [2:53] After this setback, PA analyzes for points quite well. JJB threatens alexin 49, so blocking is required because even the lovely mythiest 45 and attune 14a sacrifice points. Further, PA can and must select a leave that goes well with JJB's next threats, exes or xis with zorils; that will work better in several cases than ordinary out-in-twos. Plays like zeatin 28 threaten xu 18 in reply to JJB, but JJB can simply sidestep by playing xu himself for 31 at k10, leaving PA only 4 instead of 18 for his U. So PA correctly keeps multiple tiles back. His unai 23 would net 17 with best play fot this reason, and unit 25 would perform equally. One point better, however, is elain 25, because ut/xu 24 is an even better threat; JJB must abandon best threats and reply silex 25, whereby ut/up 14+4 nets 18.
>JJB: ?EEILNX M1 EXEs +34 422
#note 2:34 [5:46] JJB thinks exes 34 is best, but neither player spots the reply sext 23+6 in time. In this case, there is again one more point available, because telex 14c now doubles the X for 28 and PA can only reply est/tes 18+4.
>PA: ?ET 2L E.iT +20 340
#note 0:58 [1:55] Second-best.
>PA: (ILN) +6 346
#note PA plays admirably and keeps close with no bingo against two, but JJB then exploits a better hook than PA had, and a timely block, to pull ahead. Points improvable based on tiles played: PA 4, JJB 9. Points improvable based on values: JJB 110.2.
