Player 1
#player1 Jack_Overby Jack Overby
#player2 Jonathan_Lindh Jonathan Lindh
>Jack_Overby: ?DEEMRS 8G ReDEEMS +74 74
#note JL: Game 6 of the Chicago Literacy tournament.

JRO: I accidentally flashed my blank while turning over my tiles. Flashed a blank! A perfect summary of Jon's and my Scrabble history hitherto. I think I've averaged about 2.5 blanks per game against him.
>Jonathan_Lindh: AIIRTUV L2 TRIVIU. +24 24
#note JL: Best play.
>Jack_Overby: AHOOOTW 7F WAHOO +26 100
#note JRO: The only play worth considering.
>Jonathan_Lindh: ?AAFQRS 2J QA. +32 56
#note JL: Best play.

JRO: By traditional notions of equity, yes, but 4G FAIRyISM 63 is worth 20 style points and is thus a slightly gooder play.
>Jack_Overby: HNOPRTT 6I THR.P +36 136
#note JRO: Best by a country mile- as opposed to the urban mile, which equals 1 kilometer.
>Jonathan_Lindh: ?AFIMRS 9B AFfIRMS +81 137
#note JL: Best play.

JRO: By traditional notions of equity, yes, but 4G FAIRyISM 63 is worth 20 style points and is thus a slightly gooder play.
>Jack_Overby: EJNNOTY K8 .NJOY +30 166
#note JL: Jack was about to play EJNOY but stopped himself just in time!

JRO: True story. I would not have ejnoyed that. And to think Jon would have allowed me to embarrass myself... so heartless!
>Jonathan_Lindh: EEIKOTZ L10 OKE +39 176
#note JL: Best play.
>Jack_Overby: AEELNTU M10 TEAL +31 197
#note JRO: I struggled for a while to find the right fit, but this seems as good as anything. Maybe M2 EATEN 33?
>Jonathan_Lindh: EEIIRTZ 3G ZITI +35 211
#note JL: Second best play! This should have worked out better than the best play because Jack had UNBALED but it didn't.

JRO: A slightly suboptimal play that prevents your opponent from bingoing is some 2300-level wizardly. Nicely done, Jon "Nigel" Lindh!
>Jack_Overby: ABDELNU 4D UNBADE +40 237
#note JL: Accepting this may have cost me the game. What can I say, it looked convincing to me.

JRO: It was convincing me to me, too, I guess. Why make a valid 30+ point word (UNLEAD/UNLADE/ULNAD) when you can risk the game on a phony? Horrendous. The first of a multitude of abysmal plays I'd make down the stretch.
>Jonathan_Lindh: AEEEIRR 6B AERIE +16 227
#note JL: FERIAE, FAERIE or this? They are all pretty close.
>Jack_Overby: AEEILOP 8A ALOE +24 261
#note JRO: 8A PLIE 30 is apparently best. I guess AEO isn't 6 points worse than EIP, especially given the dearth of consonants in the pool (10/36).
>Jonathan_Lindh: CEELRTU B8 ..C +11 238
#note JL: I don't know, maybe LACER here? There were only 2 unseen E's so I was trying to block X bombs and set myself up for an unblockable bingo. THis can't be that bad right?

JRO: Quite a tough position. Quackle likes H1 ELIDE 18, F9 RELUCT 12 or E3 UNCI 12. I understand Jon's fear of the X-spot, but it's unlikely I would have drawn it on my last play, and given the score, he probably needs to hope to bingo and/or draw the X himself. EELRTU doesn't hit enough to justify this play.
>Jack_Overby: BEGINPS 11A BEING +22 283
#note JRO: This play perplexed me. I considered G3 ZAP 14 as well as the N1 S-plays (BEINGS/BINGES/BEGINS 35), all of which look better than mine. I thought Jon's range was stronger than it was, but even if that's the case, he's likely to have the last S and bingo on row 13/14 anyways, at which point I'm sunk. It seems best to try to outrun him or to just fish off the B or P and hope to hit a counterbingo. My play blows up my rack and leaves me just as vulnerable to a bingo. Not good.
>Jonathan_Lindh: AEELRTU A11 .RUTE +24 262
#note JL: I think the other 5's that play here were a little better but I had the right idea.

JRO: Quackle claims that BUTLE/BRUTE are 5+% better, but that can't be true.
>Jack_Overby: DILOPSY D11 .OILY +24 307
#note JL: Surprised at this but I can't punish Jack for this.

JRO: Why I didn't play 12C DOILY 28 here, I'll never know. That's best by far. Yet another terrible play. Plays at 13G and N2 (e.g. PLOYS, ODYLS, IDYLS) are also much better. I really butchered these last few moves!
>Jonathan_Lindh: AEGILNO 15D .OGIN +27 289
#note JL: I don't know.

JRO: Me neither. Quackle likes 5L VOG 11. He needs to draw an S.
>Jack_Overby: ADGPSTU 14J ADUST +21 328
#note JL: Good blocking play by Jack.

JRO: Another awful play. I was clueless down the stretch- completely misevaluated the risks of the S hooks. Looks like I should have just hooked onto ENJOY myself (e.g. GAUDS, PUGS, DUGS).
>Jonathan_Lindh: ADEEFLN 10K ...A +13 302
#note JL: Did not see the squeeze play of 13J FE for 28 but I don't see how this wins with Jack holding VOX. I was trying to set up an S which I hoped to pull on the next draw.

JRO: Maybe there's some sort of fish that hits bingos in two spots, but this position seems hopeless.
>Jack_Overby: CGOPSVX 3B VOX +35 363
#note JRO: Plays at 13C (PIG/GIP/PIX/VIG/CIG) look better for spread. But this will do.
>Jonathan_Lindh: DEEFLNN 13C F.NNED +22 324
#note JL: Somehow this is best!

JRO: Actually, the uber-stylish 13A UNLINED 20 is 8 points better, leaving him 13J FE 28 (which I should block, but wouldn't have, cuz I suck and can't track) or M3 EF 19. Stop using Speedy Player for everything, Jon! ;-)
>Jack_Overby: CGPSW N9 W.S +14 377
#note JL: 4K WISP for 9 as well.

JRO: WISP is 1 point better. Doh.
>Jonathan_Lindh: EL B1 LE. +12 336
#note JL: Best play.

JRO: Endgame masters!
>Jonathan_Lindh: (CGP) +16 352
#note JL: Final score recorded as 376-352. Letting UNBADE* go may have cost me this but it's hardly a sure win even if I challenge it off. I really don't think I am playing that badly, things just weren't falling into place today.

JRO: I played this game at about a 1500-level and deserved to lose. Very fortunate to escape. Yet Marty lost his game by 3 (after a recount- he'd thought he'd won by 5!)... so despite two abysmal performances in a row from my end, we would play for the title!
