#title 2019 NSC Round 18
#description Will Anderson plays Jackson Smylie in Round 18 at the 2019 NSC
>Will: ABTUUVZ -BTUUV +0 0
#note VATU looks better than exchanging, I feel like I knew that during the game but still did the wrong thing. #strategysmall
>Jackson: CHNOTTU H8 COUTH +28 28
>Will: AADORTZ 12D AZOT. +34 34
>Jackson: FHIMNTU E9 FUT. +32 60
>Will: AADIORR D5 RADIO +12 46
#note Extremely uninspiring move but there's really not much better.
>Jackson: AHIMNPU C2 HUMAN +24 84
#note didn't find enough plays here - HUM 13B and P(R)AHU are both good. I saw THUMP and HAO, both of which seem a bit better than this. I underestimated IMNPU, I suppose it's at least balanced and decent for scoring despite the U. I feel like I overthought this position despite not thinking very coherently. #findingmedium
>Will: AEEKLRT E3 LEK +28 74
>Jackson: BIINOPU B3 NUB +21 105
#note INCUBI is cool! PION was the other word I considered. BUN at b2 scores an extra point, but NUB is slightly more defensive, taking out the left side more. I score more next turn after PION, it looks wholly better. #tacticssmall
>Will: AEIRTTW 11G A.WITTER +74 148
>Jackson: EIIOPSW 8F WI.OPIES +66 171
#note I remember considering WICOPIES as a bingo I could draw when I played NUB, crazy
>Will: AEEJOOP M3 POOJA. +32 180
>Jackson: CEENRSX I7 C.X +40 211
#note EENRS really isn't very good on this board, I should be playing OXEN! even EXEC is better #visionsmall
>Will: ?BEEISS N10 B.IES +26 206
#note Quackle wants 10J BE or BEE but Jackson is certainly not going to open the board for me after those moves; I felt I had to do it myself. Then again, the EISS? leave is pretty great for hitting the COUTHS spot...
>Jackson: EEENRSV O6 NERVE +28 239
#note wanted to play an extra tile to get the blank - ERS isn't such an improvement over ES on this board. happy with this choice
>Will: ??EFGQS 10J Qi +62 268
>Jackson: ADEEGLS N1 GLADE +23 262
#note huge misplay this turn, totally missed a lot of interesting options. HUMANE opens the door to GE(D) and LE(D)E and LE(D)GE as setups. GAED N2 is also perhaps a better play. S(T)AGED is interesting as well. The key here is whether he has a blank on his rack. I think the answer is usually, since Q(I) for 31 would often come down. But with the board not great for bingoes, or a rack that isn't helped by the blank a lot, he may elecet to play Qi without another blank in hand. I remember thinking it was decently likely he didn't have another blank, but wasn't sure. I now think that he would probably keep the blank very often and play for 31, the options to outrun in an endgame are immense. A sim has GED, LEDGE, STAGED, GAED, EDGE, and GLADE I'm really not sure what's right, but I am pretty sure I would play LE(D)GE had I seen HUMANE. #visionsmall
>Will: ?EFGNSY 1L YE.G +39 307
#note I was getting all ready to slap down FoGY for 58 before GLADE; but YEGG scores just enough to play instead.
>Jackson: DEIINST 14H TIDINE.S +63 325
>Will: ?EFNRRS G7 R.F +28 335
#note Agonizing move - my thought process here was, if I play 15G REF and Jackson drew the ??GY hammer in the top left, I'm in deep trouble even if I bingo with a cheapie along row 2. Whereas if I play RIF instead, I keep my vowel, and I will either outrun ??GY plays with bingos on row 15, or outrun all but the heaviest of Jackson's non-bingo row 15 plays with a row 2 bingo if I can just get maybe one more vowel. Quackle likes the idea of 13A FERN, putting an E out in space that I can then bingo to - cool idea. Sim prefers REF and CP prefers FERN.
>Jackson: DGIINOY 15C YOGINI +39 364
#note Jackson correctly passes on DOGY to block the lane

other interesting plays are DINO and IODIN. DINO saves SAGY, LOGY, ORGY and other words with blank draws at A1. IODIN draws into those a1 plays as well as 14B plays like MANGY, VEALY, etc. I think I still lose to bingoes after DINO: I'm up 16, down about 50 after a 2 row bingo, and will will have 5 tiles. it will be about a tie game after the a1 play, and I'll have to hope I have an outplay he can't block and that he can't score enough to outrun an out. IODIN seems to outrun better, but after a bingo Will will have 4 tiles, so it's more likely he could draw an outplay immediately and win. IODIN + 14B play will outrun more because I will only have two tiles leftover, it's more likely I draw a word that fits (rather than at the tougher a1 spot), and I will be able to do an out in two more easily since I'm leaving myself with 2 tiles. All this may also make Will fish instead of bingoing: if he can fish at 13b, he blocks the main scoring play of mine, and if he can get a bingo down (on column A or row 2) he will basically guarantee a win. The other worry with IODIN is just getting straight up outrun. If he has a blank and an S he can possibly block the setup and win anyways. YOGINI is a sort of middling approach, it outruns decently well when he doesn't bingo, forces him to bingo on row 2 or open a new line at 13b. IODIN just works out best when he bingoes immediately, but Will may choose not to bingo immediately anyways (which is a good thing since it forces him to forgo a bingo, unlike YOGINI which opens the door for him to win easily when he does bingo). RIF has a fairly consonant heavy bingo range: if he had more vowels I would expect a play along row 15, cause he is in a pretty decent position to try and outrun. that makes the 2 row a bit less worrisome than usual, since you have to end with a vowel. I'm not sure what's correct here between IODIN and YOGINI.
>Will: ?AEENRS 2F cASERNE +63 398
#note Played this to prevent big overlaps starting at 1D.
>Jackson: ADELMOV 1G DAME +36 400
>Will: ALR D1 LAR +13 411
#note 12L ARIL is 3 better #endgamesmall
