>Jim_Burlant: EEEHIOP 15K .HEEP +48 91
#note Or EPOCH 15H.
>Paul_Epstein: NNUVW -5 +0 98
>Jim_Burlant: EFGGIOO O4 FOO.IE +39 130
#note GG is no prize as leaves go, but I have to do something about the O column and 39 points is 39 points, leave notwithstanding. This is best, and I'm back in the game at just shy of 49%.
>Paul_Epstein: ?AAEINN H1 fAINEAN. +74 172
#note Lots of bingoes to choose from for Paul; the most stylistic of them would be ENCAENIA 12, and I4 INFAUNAE. But this is definitely his best bingo.
>Jim_Burlant: ?ADGGMO N3 DOGM. +33 163
#note I recognized DEMAGOGUE as a possbility through disconnected letters but had no idea that DEMAGOG was a word. Nonetheless, that's academic here since FOOTIE blocked where DEMAGOGs would have played. Without a playable bingo, this is best.
>Paul_Epstein: AHN J12 NAH +33 205
>Jim_Burlant: ?AFGKRR 5E FAK.R +24 187
#note With NAH having blocked FAKER 12H, I considered this and G3 KAF. I rejected KAF for two reasons. First, I felt it devalued my blank by shutting down the northern half of the board. Secondly, the way I had been drawing this tournament I just *knew* I would draw another R so I really wanted to unload mine. I suspected Quackle would mildly object to this and my hunch was right. The duck indicates that KAF is not best, but the best play here is an option I never considered: I12 ARK. Perhaps it's a smidge risky to open up the S hook on the triple with 4 unseen and none in my rack, but it solves the rack problems reasonably well and scores 3 more points than this. ARK wins a sim, KAF is second, and this is the bronze medalist at an equity deficit of almost 4 points to ARK. 44% to win.
>Paul_Epstein: AJT I11 TAJ +41 246
>Jim_Burlant: ?BGORRU N10 BROGU. +30 217
#note I was lamenting that this rack hadn't shown up on my DOGMA turn, as GRUBwORM would have been a sweet play (I never would have found BROGUERY). Since no bingoes play, this is best. Not quite 37% to win in a short sim.
>Paul_Epstein: ESZ 4D SEZ +40 286
>Jim_Burlant: ?BDEORR 2F BO.RDERs +70 287
#note Or DRAWBORE 2F, 2D REBOARDS, or 2C PREBOARD. Difference between the first and fourth best of those options in a sim: 0.2 equity points and 0.2% winning chances. Style preference.
>Paul_Epstein: SV 12H V...S +24 310
>Jim_Burlant: GNNORRS K1 G.NRO +12 299
#note Not seeing the star play, I figured the only tack was to turn tiles to chase the X and clean the rack while I did it. Turns out this is the only real mistake I made this game, as I missed an incredibly sweet extension: NON(ACADEMIC) for 36! GENRO is the sim bronze medalist, but that's only because the rest of the options are so lame. Sim runner up is 3C NOR. NONACADEMIC wins 52%, and this wins just shy of 41. However, given his next two plays, I was probably hooped no matter what I did here.
>Paul_Epstein: EILOSTU 9B OUTLIES +67 377
>Jim_Burlant: AINPRSY 6F PI. +37 336
#note Wrong rack for this board, as there are no bingos. First order of business is staying in the game if I still can. This scores 37 points and is clearly best, but it's all but over: 3% to win.
>Paul_Epstein: EX 10A EX +50 427
#note That's all she wrote.
>Jim_Burlant: ANRSWWY 11B YAWN +33 369
#note At this point I thought to myself a la Bill Lumbergh, "Um...yeeeeeeaaaaaaah." I hate blocking my only remaining bingo lines but the WW draw was the final nail in the coffin. This is my best play, for whatever it's worth.
>Paul_Epstein: EEY L4 EYE +21 448
>Jim_Burlant: EIORSTW 1M OWT +19 388
#note Throwing in the towel. I considered fishing one tile on row 12, but nixed that idea when I realized the unseen pool guaranteed he could block any plausible fish I put down. So I figured my best tack was to score some points and hopefully go out in two. I probably would have been better off playing WO O12 for 2 more and holding the T, but whatever. My spread entering this game was on the south side of -700, so a few more points here and there weren't going to make any difference.
>Paul_Epstein: IILNTUV 10J V.N +14 462
>Jim_Burlant: EIIRS 7C IRIS +20 408
>Paul_Epstein: ILLTU D11 .ILL +14 476
>Jim_Burlant: E 14J ..E +11 419
#note I replayed the game in Quackle assuming that (a) I found NONACADEMIC and (b) that in the game, I drew AIP on the replenish after GENRO (in the actual game I drew AIPY after GENRO). Even in that instance, I didn't have a prayer of winning. NONACADEMIC would have left me 24 points closer. But he he still would have hit with OUTLIES, PIA was still my best comeback play, he still hits the X bomb, and I'm still stuck with WW in my rack and not enough time to clear the crap before he shut down the southeast. Best case, I probably lose by 25 - 30, but that's about it. Some games just aren't winnable and this was one of them.
