>sal: ENQRU 8D QUERN +48 48
>Jackson: AEHOPWX 7F HOAX +33 33
#note there's a lot of pressure to make a good first play of nationals. I took more time this tournament than I usually do, which I think had a positive effect. I thought about WHA(U)P as well but the X didn't seem very powerful. WHAUP does make the position a bit harder because there are no easy parallels, but EPW also parallels fairly well if Sal plays on row 6 after HOAX, so I was happy to take this play.
>sal: BILR 9G BIRL +21 69
>Jackson: ELNPPUW K5 PULPEN +27 60
#note ridiculous position - I couldn't believe there was nothing here that wasn't trash. P(L)EW might be one of the best valid words here, besides exchanging. I hated leaving the E hook open so I didn't want to exchange. I strongly felt this phony would stay given how early on in the tournament we are.
>sal: BEEEIIS -BEEEI +0 69
>Jackson: AEFIKOW L1 FAKIE +36 96
>sal: ARY 1L .RAY +30 99
>Jackson: EIOOOWW 2N WO +25 121
#note definitely worth it to not exchange here - I can draw stuff from the K or the P and really bail out the rack.
>sal: EITU D8 .UIET +28 127
>Jackson: EEIOOTW 8K .EWIT +33 154
#note doesn't feel like WO(K)E is worth it - EIOT isn't going places here and I much prefer scoring points rather than gambling on an occasional bingo.
>sal: EEGO L10 OGEE +12 139
>Jackson: AEENOOR 3L .OAN +28 182
#note I'm not sure if I considered OA(K)EN here - I may have missed it. OAKEN sims way better than KOAN. Quackle says I bingo 41% of the time after OAKEN, which seems very high to me. Sal's bingo % is also very high, 26% or so. The pool is quite good and has 2 blanks. I didn't consider how much better EOR could be here, I remember being satisfied with EEOR given there being almost twice as many consonants as vowels in the pool (surely that is part of what helps EOR so much). This is a big oversight
>sal: ?AEIMOT 14I AMOsITE +83 222
>Jackson: DEEGORT 15G GORED +30 212
#note now there are 13 vowels and 28 consonants in the pool, so it felt very important to hold onto vowels here. I considered GE(E)D for that reason. the two scoring spots off of AMOsITE seem to be close to equal - Sal bingoes a bit more on the 15 row but scores a bit more on the O column, overall averaging about 2 more on the 15 row. Quackle likes GORED and DOGE and OGE(E)D pretty similarly. I'm surprised GEED bingoes the same amount as OGEED - I thought the same thing would happen this turn as last where the vowelly leave bingoed a bit more. This play was very difficult but it seems a few different plays are fine.
>sal: DNO 15M DON +23 245
>Jackson: CEIINOT 13E NOTICE +25 237
#note I didn't want to fish here cause the board is not good for bingoing - with SSSS? unseen, scoring well and turning over tiles feelt like a good idea. I also get to keep a vowel with NOTICE which is nice to counteract the 24:9 ratio unseen. This plays for 2 more at C9 but that gives back a big scoring spot. This play gives back a scoring spot but those plays will often give something back in return. Sal averages over 7 more after the C9 placement! Another nice thing about 13E notice is that big plays Sal can have underlapping often require him to spend 2 vowels.
>sal: ADRSU 6B DURAS +20 265
>Jackson: ?BEIIRS C10 BRIE +20 257
#note really bad play - REB(U)S looks great, saving 2 vowels and the blank. I temporarily forgot about the vowel shortage in the pool and focused so hard on finding bingoes (none are available). Even BI M10 might be better to pretty much ensure a bingo. BRIE can go downhill.
>sal: AJL N6 JA.L +27 292
>Jackson: ?EINSVY 14F YE +30 287
#note Very fortunate to draw the last E - now my outscoring prospects are great.
>sal: DLTV 12K V.LDT +10 302
>Jackson: ?AFINSV 11C ..V +12 299
#note looks good to save vowels and not empty the bag. Q suggests FAV(A) to the A in DURAS but I wonder if I could lose to F2 ZAG or other out in twos... Quackle isn't very optimistic about my chances here, thinking I have about a 50% chance of winning. I think I can win way more often. Leaving 2 in the bag makes it harder for Sal to do an out in two (leaving one means he only has 8 tiles he needs to use for an out in two, rather than 9)
>sal: AGHMSST B12 GASH +22 324
