#title 2018 NSC Round CSW8
#description Evan Berofsky plays Jesse Day in Round CSW8 at the 2018 NSC
>Evan: ?EINOPT 8D POnTINE +72 72
>Jesse: ?ADFRTW E8 .uTDWARF +78 78
>Jesse: ?ADFRTW -- -78 0
#note this is kind of an epic phony - also very poorly timed, since my two other bingos (both of which I saw) are easily blockable. if I have any doubt about OUTDWARF* I should sacrifice the points, but I happened to be 99% sure it was good. this must have come up in a game at some point for the memory to be so vivid!
>Evan: AABHMOX 7G ABOHM +29 101
#note He could be even more aggressive and play something like HOAX at 7J, which I can't punish him for. but this blocks my bingos as needed.
>Jesse: ?ADFRTW 9J WAFT +20 20
#note I am not cool enough to come up with FRONTWARD! just WHEFT would've also been good but I must've doubted it. I was already 8 minutes into my clock at this point.
>Evan: AAEINQX 10H XENIA +33 134
>Jesse: ?AADRUU K3 AURU. +14 34
#note I can be a little more aggressive and set up DAUR at 11K which would fork the bottom-right nicely (and score 10 more)
>Evan: AEGMOQT 4J Q.AG +28 162
>Jesse: ?ADELSS N1 hASSLED +83 117
#note I bingoed at the top-right because I figured it was the harder lane to hit. maybe SALSAED to maximize the volatility of the board.
>Evan: EEHIMOT O1 MHO +40 202
>Jesse: DEIJSTW 9C JEW +30 147
#note I didn't want to play JOWED because it blocks row 6, which I knew I would eventually need to pull off a come back.
>Evan: EEFIORT 10B FORTE +38 240
>Jesse: ADDGIST 11B AGIST +50 197
>Jesse: CDDEIKV (challenge) +5 202
#note sweet. +5 from Evan also.
>Evan: BCEIOOT O5 OTIC +25 265
>Jesse: CDDEIKV 11K DECK +36 238
#note all of a sudden, it started to look possible that I could chase him down without bingoing. DEVI might be advisable here just because CDK shows a lot more synergy than DIV.
>Evan: ABENOUY 6G BOY +24 289
#note he really agonized over this, but the threat of the lane on row 6 forced him not to take the DECKO hook.
>Jesse: DEIIORV O10 DOVIER +54 292
#note sweet, I'm back in it. Not only that, but I was starting to heavily pressure Evan on time.
>Evan: AEINOPU M2 PI. +26 315
>Jesse: AILLRRR M11 .IRL +12 304
#note my comeback meets a snag in the form of an awful rack. nonetheless, I loved playing this because, after Evan's defensive play for the game, I knew that he would be certain that I had the S in hand. another option is ARILLI at 13K but I'm ok with this.
>Evan: AEENOUV 14K VA.U. +16 331
>Jesse: AGLRRST D8 ....L +14 318
#note hard move. I was trying to set this up ahead of time so I had something to fish for. even just drawing something down the road like ERSATZ would surely be enough to win. another option is ERG at I10, but Evan was sure to block at any cost. one last option worth considering is GLOBI, which is unusually promising because there are 4 Ns and 2 Is left - but at the end of the day I was happy with this.
>Evan: EEELNOZ 12H ZONE +28 359
#note after the game, he mentioned that he should've played LEEZE on this turn - I agree. he didn't have much time.
>Jesse: AGIRRST H12 .ARI +39 357
#note guess I got a chance
>Evan: DEELNNN B10 ..NNED +20 379
#note nice play - Q gives him about a 57% chance of winning. if I have EDGY in hand, he will probably lose.
>Jesse: GIRSTUY 15B .UITS +7 364
#note agh, the agony. I had about 4 minutes to figure out this endgame, and I figured I had to block ENE at A13. ultimately couldn't figure anything out other than hoping he mistracked and I got GRAY to go out. BUT - in actuality, I have a trick available that could very well steal the game! If I take the 25 for YUG right away, then the obvious play of ENE for 22 at A13 leaves him with only one spot for his last two tiles - L(UR)E at 14F, which I can block - TURR at 14F - leaving SIK/WAFTS/ID as an unblockable out-play for 25!!! I wish that I had caught some inkling of the scheme, but it was beyond me on this occasion.
>Evan: EEELN 14D LEE +13 392
#note he should play on row 13 optimally.
>Jesse: GRY 13G G.Y +22 386
#note even optimal play after YUG still leads to only a 1-point win for evan! perhaps if I'd realized how dangerous SIK was, I would've come up with the YUG scheme.
>Evan: EN L13 E.N +6 398
>Evan: (R) +2 400
