#player1 David_Eldar David Eldar
#player2 James_Curley James Curley
>David_Eldar: IIIII -IIIII +0 0
#note Round 19, National Scrabble Championship 2018 in Buffalo, NY. This is a game against world champion David Eldar. I got very lucky in this game and David got incredibly unlucky.
>James_Curley: DEG 8G DEG +10 10
#note I didn't write my opening rack down for some reason.
>David_Eldar: III -III +0 0
#note David exchanges four times in this game and told me that three of those he had the Q, so the exchanges were probably all consonants.
>James_Curley: ACEENTT G8 .ANCETTE +63 73
#note only bingo.
>David_Eldar: AEILMOR 14A ROLAMI.E +74 74
#note highest scoring, sets up an interesting board. I'm sure David wanted an open board against me - I was happy to do that and try and outdraw him.
>James_Curley: BEEJSSX 15G .XES +60 133
#note sims best.
>David_Eldar: EKN A12 KE.N +39 113
>James_Curley: BEJMSST J6 JEST +33 166
#note missed the better play of 12C JEMB(E)S for 3 more points leaving ST. Definitely better.
>David_Eldar: IIIUUUU -IIIUUUU +0 113
>James_Curley: BMNRSUY 12D BUY.R +22 188
#note I was overly cautious here. I liked that this play blocked the floaters in ROLAMITE and DANCETTE, knowing that David's word knowledge is far better than my own. However, I should have focussed on my own rack management and worked harder to get rid of the M leaving only NS or RS. The better plays are 11G (C)RUMBY, 12D UMB(E)RY or C10 RUMB(L)Y.
>David_Eldar: AOPU K3 OUPA +21 134
>James_Curley: AAIMNSU L4 MAIN +34 222
#note this or L3 UNAI. I liked not giving an easy M column comeback play despite the ASU leave vs AMS leave.
>David_Eldar: OO 11D OO +12 146
>James_Curley: ACDRSUY 8L SCRY +38 260
#note Here I just tried to score points and get a >100 point lead. However, this is not a great move in retrospect. I'm now giving a Y in the triple lane and a floating R for bingos. Much better is 11G (C)URACY which is 10 points fewer but clogs up the bingo lane down column M and keeps the S. 10J SAUCY scores 4 points fewer keeping DR and only provides a floating Y in the N column. Quackle likes 15D YU best - but this is too fishy for my style.
>David_Eldar: AEINRST H1 STEARIN. +77 223
>James_Curley: ADDNRUZ N5 AZU.N +34 294
#note Completely whiffed on 3C UNRAZ(E)D for 58. One of those you never miss in word study, but didn't look for the spot for it. Quackle prefers 14J AZURN for2 more points than my play.
>David_Eldar: IIIIIU -IIIIIU +0 223
#note David's fourth exchange of the game ...
>James_Curley: ADDEGOR 3B DOGEAR.D +78 372
#note only bingo - a very fortunate draw to DDR.
>David_Eldar: ?LLOOTU 1A TOLUOLe. +74 297
#note other possibles: ROLLOUTS, OUTROLLS, OUTPOLLS.
>James_Curley: EGHIRVW O1 WEIGH +47 419
#note Missed a disconnected nine! E1 (O)V(E)RWEIGH
>David_Eldar: DFIO 4A FIDO +36 333
>James_Curley: AIIRTVV J11 VIVA. +13 432
#note There are lots of ways of getting rid of the two VV. I chose to block the bingo lane from the C, which was maybe overly cautious. 5D VAV is fine.
>David_Eldar: AFP M2 FAP +23 356
#note pretty sure this is where he played it, though it was overscored by 4.
>James_Curley: EHIIRTW A4 .IRTH +33 465
>David_Eldar: ?BEILNQ M8 .INQuE +37 393
#note best
>James_Curley: EIW 5E WEI. +14 479
>James_Curley: (BL) +8 487
