#player2 John_Holgate John Holgate
>JD: AEINOOV 8F OVA +12 12
#note better than AVION - gives back a lot less, bingos a bit more.
>John_Holgate: EY 9H YE +11 11
>JD: DDEINOQ E6 QIN +19 31
#note closer than I realized between this and just playing QI - the N really helps the leave. In fact QI at 9E is preferred by a tad.
>John_Holgate: AAL G6 LA.A +16 27
>JD: DDENOOZ 7G .DZ +30 61
#note damnit, I have persistent DZO and GJU blindness. need to play more.
>John_Holgate: DEINV J4 VINED +25 52
#note felt lucky that he didn't bingo here.
>JD: BDENOOS K7 DOB +25 86
#note this move was hard. DOOB at K7 seemed too psycho. I was reluctant to play NOD at K5, but what Q points out is that it makes it pretty hard for John to score afterward - and I can still draw some bingos on row 10. a good lesson on not getting tunnel vision about bingoing
>John_Holgate: EEFMM L8 FEMME +47 99
#note what would this rack have done on the NOD board? likely very little...a sample size of 1, but still illustrative
>JD: ?EENORS 13G aRENOSE +77 163
#note Q likes the fork after ENDORSE much better (as in, two good scoring spots instead of just H12)
>John_Holgate: AKRW 12D WARK +27 126
>JD: CDLRRRU 12I RUD.R +15 178
#note RUDER to avoid setting up S hook
>John_Holgate: FOP 11C FOP +29 155
>JD: CILNRTU 13B CULT +23 201
#note I really agonized over this move between the defensive CULT and LINUM blocking a cheap scoring spot. in retrospect I would block LINUM more urgently - it is so easy for John to play something on row 11 to reopen an S hook, or even just to score a buncha points.
>John_Holgate: GU 11J GU. +24 179
>JD: AHILNRS 5I H.LI +14 215
#note this is pretty weak - trying to keep with the defensive theme, but not really scoring anything. I didn't want to play HIN at 10B, but just LIN at 10B really doesn't give much back and keeps a nice scoring tile. it does cut his bingo percentage from 8% to 2%, but I'm not up enough to play that defensively yet. even assuming he has something like AENST (he has been building his rack for 7 turns), LIN is still up by 6. he could also just score a boatload of points on row 4. not a good move.
>John_Holgate: AT 4J .AT +18 197
>JD: AACNORS H3 ARC +16 231
#note I had burned a lot of time up to this point. this was really hard. after VAT I should really play very conservatively - something like CAF at C9, ROC at 10B, CRAVAT at 4G or DAYAN at H7, baiting him into opening. I think the most relevant move looks like ROC in retrospect (prevents him from making some kind of tough-to-block opening).
>John_Holgate: AELNRST 2B SALTERN +74 271
>JD: AAHNOSU 1A HOA +22 253
#note Q likes this. it doesn't give back much scoring and it leads row 4 open, which I probably need to hit to win.
>John_Holgate: EX D2 .EX +20 291
>JD: ?AENSTU M9 NU +13 266
#note I wasn't sure whether to gun for a bingo on column M (making VATU/CHILIS), perhaps by fishing AX and then going for an I or O for INTUSES/TONUSES. in retrospect I think that fishing AX seems like the right line, since I'm not down that much and I may get multiple turns to fish for the bingo on column M. but this also felt like it had a reasonable chance of working - if he doesn't have the S he has to put down BENE or BENT, which will be eminently hookable. if I force him to burn his S, I may also be able to make unblockable setups down the road. I think this is at least reasonable.
>John_Holgate: GIJOST N4 JIGOTS +24 315
#note nice play - he laid JIGS/BENS down to start
>JD: ?AEIPST O1 PITA +31 297
#note I realized after the game that I had made a terrible mistake - indeed, at the time this play felt wrong, but I had some aspirations of being able to chase him down without bingoing. I should fish the P here and go for a column O bingo - if I can draw I, N, O or T I'll bingo in both lanes (8/15)! A golden opportunity missed.
>John_Holgate: ENO O6 ONE +20 335
>JD: ?BEESTW I12 ..E +3 300
#note I can win every endgame here by abandoning the bingo obsessions and thinking about this as a regular pre-endgame - EWT at 14E guarantees that I will go out to win next turn! I had gotten really low on time and was rushing to get anything down...this only wins one pre-endgame...
>John_Holgate: EGIIIIO H13 .EI +11 346
#note amazingly, I drew the one tile which is supposed to lead to a winning endgame - the Y. but I had no time to find one of the best sequences.
>JD: ?BESTWY G1 W.Y +22 322
#note ugh, lots of winning plays if I can avoid going over, but they all require fairly accurate play. couldn't score enough. I had like 5 seconds.
>John_Holgate: GIIIO 10B GI +12 358
>JD: ?BEST 14G B..S +23 345
#note ETWEES at 14E or GIBS at 10B lead to 3-point losses :-/
>John_Holgate: IIO C4 OI +11 369
>JD: ?ET 14M TEx +7 352
#note ugh no tiiiiime
>JD: (I) +2 354
