#player1 Avery Avery
#player2 George George
>Avery: EGKOORV H8 GROOVE +28 28
#note I just need to win by 22 to break 2000 in spread this tournament. Crazy.
>George: CGHU 11G C.UGH +22 22
>Avery: DDEFKMY 14H DYKED +36 64
>George: ABINRTU 13A URBANIT. +72 94
#note BRAUNITE is safer positionally.
>Avery: EEFMNOP A12 F.ME +39 103
>George: DOT 14D TOD +19 113
>Avery: EIMNOPS L6 PEONISM +86 189
>George: AEILNTU M2 ALUNITE +75 188
>Avery: EEINORS N1 OE +8 197
#note I spent a long time on this turn for no reason. I would like to keep the G's open for -ING possibilities, yet I overlooked options like 15L OE which accomplishes that and sets up an S lane when there isn't one already. I didn't want to give back easy points for him with a play like N5 OE, hence this. Everything seems mostly comparable but I wish I had done 15L OE.
>George: UV D12 V..U +16 204
>Avery: EILNNRS 4L L.N +6 203
#note I felt confident enough to risk him not having anything hooking here. I still felt attached to keeping -ING possibilities alive, and this seemed to result in the best opportunities still. In hindsight, I think this is way too volatile, as the existing bingo lanes are actually really weak. Quackle seems to like this but I feel it still may not be right.
>George: ?ACDILR O3 RADICeL +85 289
#note CRADLING scores 89, but this addresses this spot and doesn't give much back.
>Avery: EIINPRS 8A SPIERIN. +86 289
#note Not much different than SPEIRING, but plays on column C seem harder after this.
>George: AS B13 .AS +16 305
>Avery: ?AAEEOW E5 AWA.E +16 305
#note When RAS came down in less than a minute, I got really scared of a double-double making my life harder than I wanted it to be. I'd rather address those easy floaters and the R in column E than play something like AWOL. CP says to go ahead with AWEE here, but given how close he likely is to a bingo, I don't mind this. I may have misanalyzed this one.
>George: AI N9 AI +6 311
>Avery: ?EHLOTW A1 THOWLEs. +101 406
#note Extremely lucky draw.
>George: AIORRST - +0 311
#note Challenged.
>Avery: ABEOTTZ D4 AZOT. +46 452
#note This is my highest scoring option, but I did not consider the problems I could face if I draw the Q. This blocks C7, and unless I draw into QAT or Qi and he gives me a spot for it, it's going to be hard to play it. The obvious benefit of playing this is that even if he bingos (which is more unlikely than usual given that he challenged) and he Q sticks me, AZOTE puts me almost 150 ahead and it will not be easy for him to catch up if I can efficiently make use of my other non-Q tiles. My other consideration was F2 ZETA, and that seems better to block future bingos. I'm at 100% to win with this though.
>George: Y 1N .Y +15 326
>Avery: BEEJQRT C2 JET +22 474
#note I'm pretty much stuck with the Q now, so unless I draw a miracle, it's not worth my time to figure out an efficient way to shed it. I can see him having something like HEARINGS here, but there is also the risk that he drew AX for 52, so by playing this, if he does that, he will not be able to bingo after playing that and the win is secured.
>George: AGIINRS 5A .I +2 328
#note Actual rack, blocking the OX possibility.
>Avery: BEEFOQR D1 BO +16 490
#note It wasn't until next turn that I saw REIF. This was mainly to block cheap 30-pointers at B2, and I figured I would be able to address setups he might make at H1. We were both getting low on time at this point. CP says REIF is best, and this is second.
>George: AGINRSX 1D .RIG +7 335
>Avery: EEFQR G1 .REE +6 496
#note It's actually better to let him play SAX here, since this allows him to save his S for BRIGS and play his X for 30, which adds up to more in the end. I believe I had less than 2 minutes and autopiloted to this.
>George: ANSX F4 AX +30 365
>Avery: FQ B5 .F +26 522
>George: NS 1D ....S +24 389
>Avery: Q - +0 522
>George: N 10H .N +4 393
#note The combination of playing too fast and making some risks I'm not used to taking led to mistakes being made, but I was drawing well enough to mostly disguise that. I was definitely more willing than usual to play phoneys in the beginning, which I've been too hesitant to do in the past. As I have noted, I will be working now to translate my current strategies that have proven effective against a select group of players into a global strategy that can hopefully benefit me against all players. I love playing in this tournament every year and I'm hoping I'll be able to continue my current streak of 8 years of attendance. I'm looking forward to being able to improve in the right direction.
