#player2 Jim_Burlant Jim Burlant
>Chris_Guilbert: EHNW 8G HEWN +20 20
>Jim_Burlant: EFMNRTU 9B TURFMEN +72 72
#note Context: I'm 0-5 and am emotionally exhausted from what has been an absolutely brutal set of games. While I may be calm on the outside, it's clear I'm nearing full tilt. I'm just hoping for a win so I can finish the day without taking the doughnut. As for this position, this word is equally good here or at 7B.
>Chris_Guilbert: ADQ C8 Q.AD +14 34
>Jim_Burlant: ADEHJOW 11A JA.ED +28 100
#note FAIL. The trick to this position is to ignore the J. If you do that, you'll see the star play pretty easily: B9 THAWED scores 58 and is the clear winner. This? Pathetic.
>Chris_Guilbert: BCINT G4 BITC..N +17 51
>Jim_Burlant: AGHNOOW H1 WAGON +37 137
#note I couldn't decide if 12D NOHOW or this should have been the play...but I thought the triple was a slightly bigger threat and, in possession of HOW, I could wait a turn. The duck mostly agrees, saying that WHOA H1 was slightly better, and that looks right. Regardless, in retrospect I sure wish I had played NOHOW:
>Chris_Guilbert: ?EERRSZ 12D REZERoS +89 140
#note Well, I don't feel so bad now about missing B10 - It's better for Chris to not bingo and play TZAR B9 for 64, keeping his blank.
>Jim_Burlant: HIILNOS A11 .OHNS +48 185
#note Not sure I've got this rack written correctly, but if I do, the best play is a word I didn't know: THALIS B9 scores 47. Given the leave, I may be better off playing JOINS here.
>Chris_Guilbert: AGILUVY -5 +0 140
>Jim_Burlant: IILOOOY -IILOOOY +0 185
#note I considered two plays here as I totally spaced out on all other options: NOILY 14A, and this. The duck has an interesting suggestion that I wish I'd thought of: OLIO i1. That choice scores 21 and kills bingoes in the northern hemisphere. This isn't a terrible play per the duck, but that's more a reflection of how poor most of my options are.
>Chris_Guilbert: AGILUVY -5 +0 140
>Jim_Burlant: AEILNPT 13A .IP +16 201
#note Theexchange goes swimmingly...except I suck. I never saw PALATINE and and never recognized that PANTILE played on row 11! How on earth did I ever rate above 1200 playing like this?
>Chris_Guilbert: AEIKRST 1H .ATERSKI +98 238
#note He saw SARKIEST and was reasonably sure about it...but not enough to risk it for only 3 more scoreboard points.
>Jim_Burlant: ?AELNOT 15A .TONAbLE +74 275
#note I'd have thought I finally got one right...but the best play here is way beyond my skill set: ANTINOVEL 5D scores 82! 63% to win.
>Chris_Guilbert: DUU N1 .UDU +18 256
>Jim_Burlant: AEIIMOY J7 A.IMI. +14 289
#note If you need another tell-tale sign of how badly this day was going, take a look at this position. He's just opened up a juicy M spot at O4, I have an M...and I don't have a play that reaches to O8. And any play I can make has to burn the M and leave the spot open. As for this, I saw so many I's unseen that turning both of them took precedence over unloading the Y - a questionable decision if ever there was. Best here is either D7 AIRIER. To me, if I had this to do again I'd play J6 YONI.
>Chris_Guilbert: GOV K5 VOG +17 273
#note He held ANIMIS for a good while before letting it go. Yet another break I couldn't catch. :-(
>Jim_Burlant: BEEOOYY 4D YOB.. +24 313
#note Wow, I actually got a play right! It's this or 3K BOODY.
>Chris_Guilbert: U 10F U. +10 283
#note Uh oh...
>Jim_Burlant: EEIIOOY -EIIOOY +0 313
#note Enough of this crap! While I haven't helped myself with my play in this game, these draws aren't helping, either. At least there's no debating what's right here: exchanging 6 keeping an E is the play. Exchanging 7 isn't bad either, given the pool.
>Chris_Guilbert: ADG 5C GAD +21 304
>Jim_Burlant: AEEFOPX B3 APEX +35 348
#note Board blindness sets in. So paranoid about shutting down the easy 7 lne he opened (why?) that I never looked for the obvious Z underlaps. FAX/PAX at 13E are the clear winners here. This is atrocious!
>Chris_Guilbert: IVY A1 IVY +32 336
>Jim_Burlant: CEEFLOO A6 ECO +24 372
>Chris_Guilbert: LO F2 LO. +7 343
#note Post mortem, this is the play Chris said lost the game for him, and you'll see why in a couple of turns:
>Jim_Burlant: AEEFILO 4L FE. +12 384
#note Adding insult to injury I had mistracked, so I thought I'd take out the O column and leave it at that. Fortunately for me, I got lucky for the only time today:
>Chris_Guilbert: EIILRTT K9 TIT +16 359
#note Fortunately for me, he hadn't thought of OLD 3L on his previous turn. Had he played that, he'd have bingoed out with LITERATI on row 2 for the win. Instead, he's got garbage and he can't win the game.
>Jim_Burlant: AEILORS O4 SOLEI +26 410
>Chris_Guilbert: EILR N8 LIRE +8 367
>Chris_Guilbert: (AR) +4 371
#note Kinda tells you how bad the tournament was: the only game I won was easily the worst game I played all day. Glad this one was over.
