#title 2017 NSC Round 17
#description Ben Schoenbrun plays Will Anderson in Round 17 at the 2017 NSC
>Ben: ?CKMNOY 8G COKY +26 26
>Will: ADLRSTT H7 T.D +4 4
#note DOLT is probably better, though a simple response like QAT or ZIT would really hurt, and that can't happen after TOD.
>Ben: ?AILMNT J8 .AM +14 40
>Will: ADJLRST K9 TAJ +26 30
#note Benjy is likelier to have another A after YAM, so no RAJ, despite the fact that RAJ is much better for my S given that it makes an S-hooking lane.
>Ben: ?EILNRT L4 LiNTIER +72 112
>Will: DEELMRS 10B MELDERS +73 103
>Ben: DFIORSU 3L FUD +24 136
>Will: BINOPUV E5 UPBIN. +22 125
#note I didn't think of PUB. Rafi pointed out that PUB draws into a huge OVOLI 8A sometimes, which is cool. Still, UPBIND sheds more clunk, and while it does make a big S hook, FUDS is already there, and I'm hoping he has low point tiles to go with it.
>Ben: ?FIIORS C4 ORIFIc.S +64 200
>Will: ADEOOVX B5 OXO +58 183
>Ben: AENOQST D1 QATS +50 250
>Will: ADEEELV N3 .ELEAVED +69 252
>Ben: AENNNOW A7 OWN +24 274
>Will: EGHHIIW 6I WHI.G. +21 273
#note I missed a cool play here - K5 HI, setting up WEIGH for a whopping 48 points. Of course, the problem with that play would then be the huge A hook it creates with so many unseen, but for 48 points you live with it.
>Ben: AACENNR O10 ARCANE +36 310
>Will: AEHINST F1 STHENIA +76 349
#note Blocking the Q and not making the giant Z bomb the way 13H ASTHENIA does.
>Ben: BEEGNUV 1F .UBVENE +39 349
>Will: AGIOOPU N13 POO +20 369
#note This is actually a really, really instructive move. I know I have it in me to get moves like this right. First of all, I missed the full-fledged, honest-to-goodness tupik of G6 PICARO, which is absolutely awesome. However, if I'm going to miss that, the benefits of B10 MIAOU are pretty intriguing. The thing to realize here is that the P is actually a very valuable tile here for deploying the Z, and unless I'm playing PICARO for way more points, I really need to keep the P. That's because Benjy can only have ZA or ZIT N13, whereas with the P, I can draw ZAP, ZEP, or ZIP N13 - much, much more flexibility, not to mention a much higher score. MIAOU also has the benefit of blocking plays like the one he actually made, which only scores 3 fewer points than ZA. If I play MIAOU, leaving 2 in the bag, if Benjy responds with ZA, I should much more easily be able to out-in-two him, or at least simply outscore him - another benefit of MIAOU is that the leave of GOP can become things like PIROG, GRIPT, REPEG, etc. all at A1, which would be absolutely devastating in the endgame to Benjy.
>Ben: AEEGORZ B10 .AZER +34 383
>Will: AGIILUY 2A YUG. +16 385
#note Benjy is very low on time at this point, and I know that I personally struggle to see UNI a lot, and sneaky parallel endgame plays in general...so I throw a hail mary.
>Ben: EGIORT O4 TIRE +26 409
>Will: AIIL G3 ILIA +21 406
#note This was a thrilling win for me, but I simply couldn't enjoy it in the moment, as I had just dealt one of my absolute best friends in the game a brutal loss.
>Will: (GO) +6 412
